Term 4

What’s on in Term 4?
Welcome to ‘What’s On’ for Term 4 2017.

How time flies when you’re having fun, can you believe its Term 4 already? As the year has progressed the children have not only come leaps and bounds in their learning but also in their independence and understanding of school life.

We look forward to Term 4 as we continue to learn and grow together.

 Inquiry Learning

Our Inquiry Learning Unit for Term 4 is called ‘My Family History’. During this unit students will be exploring their own family unit and looking at the range of different types of family structures. We will be reading a lot of books and working closely with families to explore children’s own family history.

Maths

In maths this term we will be extending our work on numbers by exploring subtraction, sharing and money. In measurement we will continue to explore the concepts of length and time through hands on learning experiences.

We will continue to work in a range of maths groups targeting student point of need to further develop their current maths knowledge. We aim to keep our activities in maths as open ended as possible, catering for children who need to be both supported and extended.

English

Throughout Term 4, students will continue to develop their reading skills through a range of literacy rotations. The students will be exposed to a range of fiction and non-fiction texts. We will continue to develop our goal setting language through our writing goals. In writing, we will be exploring narratives by looking at characters, setting, the problem and solution. Children will plan and write their own stories.

Library

We will continue to visit the Library every week. Please remember that if students don’t have a library bag they will not be able to borrow.

Swimming

Our swimming program runs for two weeks in Term 4. We will require some parent helpers for this and will email parents information during the term. Please prepare your child for swimming by encouraging them to dry and dress themselves after a shower/bath as this will be the expectation at the pool.

100th Day of School

100 Days of School

On Wednesday the 2nd of August we had a big celebration for the Preps... It was our 100th of school! The Preps all came to school in amazing capes which they made at home, decorated with 100 items. Some had 100 stickers, 100 feathers, 100 stamps and more. They looked awesome! The teachers couldn’t believe it, we had made it to 100 days and they all felt like they were 100 years old!

We had a parade in the morning to show off our capes and crowns with the other kids and some parents cheering us on. Then the Preps rotated through each of their classrooms. In PA we played games, in PB we built towers with 100 paper cups, in PC we had a dance party and in PD made necklaces with 100 beads.

At lunch time we had a big party with lots of yummy party food. Thank you to the parents for bringing all the food and coming to help set up. It was a highlight for many of the children.
In the afternoon we celebrated and relaxed by watching a movie.

Congratulations Preps on a wonderful 100 days of school!

Term 3

What’s on in Term 3?

Welcome to ‘What’s On’ for Term 3 2017.
What a sensational first semester we have had in Prep this year. We have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know your children and working with them. They are now very familiar with school life, they have made many friends and are learning more and more every day.
We would like you thank you all for your support so far and look forward to another amazing semester together.

Inquiry Learning

Our Inquiry Learning Unit for Term 3 is called ‘Designing and Making’. We love this unit as it’s very hands on
and the children have lots of messy fun! Throughout the unit we will be looking at different materials and what things are made of. We will explore how materials can change when put into water and how they can be manipulated to be made into something new. Students will visit a range of playgrounds to look at the equipment in them and then design a new piece of equipment from the ideas they gather. Get ready for some interesting creations and inquisitive questioning!

Maths

In maths this Term will be consolidating our numbers 10 to 20. We will also be looking at numbers beyond this. We will continue to work in a range of maths groups targeting student point of need to further develop their current maths knowledge. We aim to keep our activities in maths as open ended as possible, catering for children who need to be both supported and extended. The use of ICT through classroom computers and iPads is a regular component of our maths program.

The concepts we will be covering are addition and subtraction, numbers before and after, chance and data, measurement and shapes. Due to our ‘100 Day Party’ we will be looking at all things 100!

English

Throughout Term 3, students will continue to develop their reading skills through a range of literacy rotations. At the end of Term 2, we introduced students to goal setting language through writing goals. Throughout Term 3, we will continue to develop this language and students will be able to track their progress as they achieve each goal and move on to the next one. In spelling, we will be focusing on diagraphs and onset and rime patterns. Our writing will include some creative writing and will be linked to Dr Seuss leading up to Book Week.

IRC (Library)

We will continue to visit the Library every week. During lessons in the Library children will have time to explore the way the library is set up and spend time reading together as well as exploring books independently. They will learn how to borrow and return books each week. Please remember that if students don’t have a library bag they will not be able to borrow.

Term 2

What’s on in Prep, Term 2?
What a sensational start we have had to Prep! Term one flew by so quickly but all students have already come such a long way and have settled into their new environment ready for Term two. Students know the names of their classmates and have been slowly developing new friendships. We have thoroughly enjoying getting to know your children and look forward to continuing the journey throughout Term two. Here is a snapshot of some of the exciting learnings happening in our classrooms:

Inquiry Learning ‘Living Things’

Our Inquiry Unit is called ‘Living Things’. Through our explorations in this unit, students will discover what is living and non living and what living things need to survive. Students will explore different habitats such as land and sea, our impact on survival of plants and animals and how we can care for all living things in our environment. We will be going on two excursions throughout the term as a springboard for student learning.

Maths

Our explorations in maths this term will be revisiting and consolidating numbers 1 to 10 and learning numbers to 20 and beyond. We will continue counting forwards and backwards from zero and other starting points. In Statistics and Probability students will explore pictographs, interpret data displays about yes/no questions and organise data they collect into displays of their own.

As there is a range of abilities within the class, whole class investigations where we aim to keep our activities in maths as open ended as possible, are a regular part of our program. Students will also work in like ability groups on a regular basis with learning tasks aimed at student point of need.

English

Throughout Term 2, we will continue to enjoy a wide variety of texts in the classroom. We will be focusing on a range of reading strategies such as predicting, looking at pictures for clues and looking at the starting sounds of words to help students decode unknown words. Students will also be learning an increasing number of high frequency words to further develop their reading.

SMART Spelling and phonics program will be a daily part of our literacy

sessions and will continue to be part of home learning.

Students will continue to develop written expression with weekly recount writing about their weekend. Students will be learning to use their sound knowledge to record dominant sounds in words and use known high frequency words to help form simple sentences.

IRC and Library

During lessons in the Library children will have time to explore the way the library is set up, spend time reading together as well as exploring books independently. They will learn how to borrow and return books each week.

iPads and computers are used regularly in Prep as a teaching tool during literacy and numeracy lessons.

Term 1

What’s on Term 1 in Prep?

Welcome to our first ‘What’s On’ for 2017.
What a sensational start we have had to Prep this year. We are thoroughly enjoying getting to know your children, and our days so far have been filled with lots of fun and new experiences.

Here is a snapshot of some of the exciting learnings happening in our classrooms:

Inquiry Learning

Our Inquiry Learning Unit is called ‘Starting School’. Through our explorations in this unit, we hope to give the children opportunity to settle into the routines of school life and learn a lot about each other. The children will discover the many similarities and differences between them that make them unique. We will be exploring our amazing selves through self-portraits and whole class discussions, as well as drawing and talking about our wonderful families.
Students will also be introduced to the Gardenvale Primary School values through our mascot HERRRby and through this, learn what it means to be respectful, responsible, resilient and a good friend along the way.

Maths

Our explorations in maths this term will be primarily focused on numbers 1 to 10.

We are very aware of the range of abilities in our classrooms and realise that for some children, this is revision, and for others this is brand new territory. Because of this, we aim to keep our activities in maths as open ended as possible, catering for children who need to be both supported and extended.

We will also be looking at aspects of patterns and shapes through games and hands on activities throughout the term, and will begin to use our classroom computer programs to support our Mathematical explorations.

English

Throughout Term 1, we will enjoy a wide variety of texts in the classroom. We will be reading and responding to stories through visual and creative artworks and discussions. Students will begin to develop written expression, initially through drawing and verbalising their weekend recount. We will begin practising the recognition of letter names and sounds and explore early strategies to assist when reading and writing.
We will be implementing a fine motor skills program, which involves children in a wide range of tactile experiences and activities designed to enhance the development of handwriting skills and letter formation.

IRC and Library

During lessons in the Library children will have time to explore the way the library is set up, spend time reading together as well as exploring books independently. They will learn how to borrow and return books each week.

iPads and computers are used regularly in Prep as a teaching tool during literacy and numeracy lessons.
